The Karamoja sub-region, long plagued by insecurity and food shortages, may finally be on the path to lasting stability and food security.
Karenga Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Filbert Geoffrey Ocailap , expressed optimism that the food crisis in Karamoja is set to become history, citing improved security and agricultural productivity in the area.
Speaking at the district headquarters, Mr. Ocailap credited the Uganda Peoples' Defence Forces (UPDF) for their critical role in restoring peace, which has enabled residents to return to their farmlands.
“With security guaranteed, the food problem will be history in Karamoja,” he declared.
He noted that Karenga district is now seeing an increase in maize, sorghum, and other crop yields, thanks to these positive developments.
However, the RDC raised concerns about the occasional disturbances from individuals crossing over from neighbouring Kenya, who disrupt the peace in Karamoja.
He called for continued vigilance and collaboration with authorities to address these incursions.
During a related visit to Kidepo Valley National Park, Chief Warden Richard Muhabwe hailed the stability in the region, noting a sharp rise in tourism numbers.
According to Muhabwe, Kidepo Valley now draws around 10,000 tourists annually, both local and international, largely due to the successful disarmament initiatives that have improved safety across the region.
He highlighted that the park is home to the largest herds of buffalo in the world, making it a key tourist attraction in East Africa.
“Tourism has played a major role in the region’s recovery, and it’s not just about the visitors,” Muhabwe added.
“Revenue from tourism is supporting the development of infrastructure such as schools and hospitals, which are crucial to Karamoja's future.”
The efforts to rebuild Karamoja extend beyond security and tourism. Mr. Abukongimole Samuel Lobeka, Chairperson of Karenga district Local Council V, praised the government’s poverty eradication programs such as the Parish Development Model and Emyooga.
These initiatives, he said, have significantly improved the livelihoods of the local population by providing financial support and empowering communities to increase their productivity.
The event, which marked a significant milestone for Karamoja’s recovery, was attended by a wide range of dignitaries, including Ms. Carol, Senior Presidential Advisor on Political Affairs, and Mr. Okiring David, Assistant Warden of Tourism.
Local leaders, representatives from the Uganda Police, and members of the Karucunas community also attended, underscoring the collaborative efforts behind Karamoja's transformation.
