The Anti-Corruption Court has granted bail to three Members of Parliament, Yusuf Mutembuli, Paul Akamba, and Cissy Namujju who are facing corruption charges.
Each MP was released on a Sh50 million cash bond, with additional stringent conditions set by the court.
Judge Lawrence Gidudu, emphasized that the bail would not delay the trial, promising a verdict by October 31, 2024.
The accused must also surrender their passports and provide sureties for a non-cash bond of Sh100 million.
During today’s proceedings, Judge Gidudu dismissed audio evidence allegedly recorded by Human Rights Commission chairperson Mariam Wangadya.
The evidence, which purportedly captured the MPs requesting a kickback, was not properly disclosed or marked as an exhibit.
“While the charges are serious and have contributed to recent anti-corruption protests, the fact that the MPs were arrested before receiving the alleged kickback justifies their bail.”
Despite the ruling, there is uncertainty regarding MP Paul Akamba.
His family remains anxious about his situation, as he faces additional charges in the same court.
The court will reconvene on August 8 and 9, 2024, for further hearings.
