Justice Lawrence Gidudu of the High Court has set Monday, August, 5 ,2024 as the date to rule on the bail application for three Members of Parliament accused of asking for a bribe from Uganda Human Rights Commission to enhance its budget.
MPs Paul Akamba, Cissy Namujju, and Yusuf Mutembuli who have been on remanded for 53 days asked court to release them on bail.
On Friday, the three MPs presented their national IDs, work IDs, and passports as proof they would not abscond if granted bail.
Additionally, they provided several sureties, including fellow Members of Parliament, asserting that these individuals were qualified to guarantee their return to court.
However, the prosecution, led by counsel Jonathan Muwaganya, opposed the bail request, arguing that the sureties presented by the accused were not substantial.
Muwaganya said prosecution is prepared to proceed with the trial, noting that all witnesses are present and ready to testify.
He suggested that the case could be expedited, ensuring swift justice without the need for bail.
After hearing arguments from both sides, Justice Gidudu set Monday, August, 5 to rule on the bail application.
