The Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) party has warned government not to politicize the recent assassination of Arua Municipality Member of Parliament Hon. Ibrahim Abiriga. The call was made by UPC President Jimmy Akena on Wednesday, June 13, 2018.
Akena, also the Lira Municipality MP, made the comments in reaction to statements made by President Yoweri Museveni at the June 11 burial of Abiriga in Arua. President Museveni claimed that Abiriga had been shot dead over his love for the National Resistance Movement (NRM), the ruling party.
President Museveni went on to accuse members of the opposition of having a hand in Abiriga’s death. President Museveni then wondered why the opposition was killing NRM supporters yet his government does not kill opposition members it does not agree with.

Akena asked the Uganda Police Force (UPF) and other government actors to desist from politicizing the death of Abiriga. Akena instead urged the Police to concentrate on thoroughly investigating and finding the culprits responsible for the vocal MP who made his name at the forefront of a constitutional amendment that removed presidential age limits.
Akena said it was more important for Uganda’s security agencies to concentrate on improving security for all Ugandans. Akena asked the government to desist from deflecting blame and work on loopholes in its security agencies.
The UPC president expressed support for President Museveni’s other order that boda boda riders must be registered and wear clearly identifiable clothing. President Museveni said that all commercial motorcyclists must wear helmets with their numbers clearly indicated on their helmets and visible at night.
Akena agreed that it was high time the commercial motorcycle industry was regulated for the sake of security and providing better services to the population.
