Former Lugazi mayor jailed over Shs 58 million debt

The former Lugazi Municipality mayor John Bosco Aseya has been sentenced to six months in prison after failing to pay a debt of Shs 58 million.

He will serve his sentence at Kirinya Prison.

Aseya's imprisonment comes less than a month after journalist Muyanga Lutaaya was given a similar sentence in a case where he failed to pay Shs 57 million accruing from an election petition.

Lutaaya was however freed after negotiations with his opponent, Kennedy Lubogo.

Aseya who contested and lost to NRM's Deogratious Tumwesigye in the 2016 elections unsuccessfully petitioned Jinja High Court contesting the outcome of the election.

He was ordered to pay Shs 58 million.

Jinja Grade One magistrate Summaya Kasule sentenced him to Kirinya Prisons for six months after he failed to pay the money.

Aseya asked FDC leaders to come to his rescue.
