Namayingo: Kadaga decries high rate of teenage pregnancy

The First Deputy Prime Minister Rebecca Kadaga has vowed to address high rate of teenage pregnancy, cross border conflicts and service delivery gap in Namayingo district by engaging different leaders in the area.

Kadaga made the remarks during a fundraising drive aimed at raising funds to rehabilitate some primary schools in the district which are currently in poor condition.

About 60 schools in Namayingo district are in a sorry state requiring agent attention before schools are reopened in January next year and Busoga leaders kicked off the fundraising drive to ensure that these schools are supported.

During the launch of the drive, Kadaga who donated Shs 5 million and 1,000 iron sheets to renovate the most affected schools starting with Namayingo primary school.

She attributed the high rate of early and teenage pregnancy in the district to Covid-19.

"Covid-19 has exacerbated the situation. It was bad enough already but it has gotten much worse because of the pandemic. When children are idle, parents are not taking care of them .So we have got to pay much attention especially in the island districts because life is not a simple one," she said.

Regarding the state of schools in the district, Kadaga explained that as leaders they have agreed to improve the education in the area under Busoga education initiative.

Vincent Kimali, the district senior education officer, noted that many young girls have become pregnant during Covid-19 lockdown, expressing fear that some of them are more likely to drop out of school.

Kimali said out of the 84 schools in the district, 80% of them need to be renovated and given furniture because their learners have been sitting on the floor.
