Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) has warned that the recent electoral events in Zambia should be a wake-up call to the Ugandan elite, as they applaud the country’s Electoral Commission for fairness.
The party has also challenged legislators who are in their constituencies monitoring the Emyooga project to push for better empowerment programmes.
"As the saying goes, the problem of this country is the elite, the day the elite say we want a better country, we will have it. This country has been [taken over by] a gang of thieves nicknamed the mafias that steal in a stupid way," said Harold Kaija, the deputy secretary general FDC during a news conference on Monday.
He called upon Justice Simon Byabakama, the chairperson electoral commission to imitate and learn from Zambia and next time do the needful so that he becomes a hero.
"We congratulate Hakainde Hichilema, President-elect of Zambia. As you are aware in Africa incumbents are not easy to defeat. Even if you defeat them they tend to super glue to get around. We congratulate the electoral commission that was brave enough to declare the winner," he said.
Regarding President Museveni’s speech on the security situation in the country last week, Kaija claimed that his statement was fell short of an apology.
"That's what we saw. He was blaming everybody, not himself. When you have the president who is not in charge, everything is a mess. You are speaking about human rights, yet you said you are a master of violence. Mr Museveni must be scared of someone we don't know," said kaija.
