In a bid to support small and medium enterprises (SMEs) operating in urban settings, MTN Uganda has launched its Zimba business platform in Lira City.

The launch that gathered local business owners and community leaders in Lira City saw the company demonstrating to locals how to transact business without using cash.

Richard Yego, the CEO of Mobile Money at MTN Uganda, said the initiative, Zimba Business, is designed to offer a comprehensive suite of digital solutions tailored specifically for SMEs

“The introduction of Zimba business in Lira City underscores our dedication to empowering SMEs. We believe that by providing them with the right tools and support, we can drive economic growth and create more opportunities for local entrepreneurs,” says Yego.

The MTN Zimba with Momo initiative includes mobile payment options, business management tools, and access to financial services.

Yego said the platform is aimed at helping streamline operations and enhancing the efficiency of business.

“By leveraging MTN’s extensive mobile network and technological capabilities, the platform aims to bridge the gap between traditional business practices and the digital economy,” Yego said on Tuesday during the launch in Lira City.

For his part, Daniel Ogwal Engwedo, the vice chairperson of Lira Main Market, said the initiative could help reduce losses incurred during cash transactions.

“Over the years, the safety of money has always been a challenge considering that you have to carry all the money in cash. With the digital transformation, the safety of money is now guaranteed,” says Ogwal.

Susan Obura, a businesswoman at Lira Main Market, said the efforts could ease access to financial services in terms of soft loans.

“For many of us, accessing advanced business tools had always been a challenge. MTN’s initiative will not only provide us with these tools but also offer the training needed to use them. This will undoubtedly help us grow our businesses as we can access loans using the same system,” says Mrs Obura.

Historically, businesses have continued to face economic challenges, including attacks by thugs on business premises and the recent wave of highway robbery.
