Uganda’s Ministry of Health, in collaboration with WHO Uganda, has ramped up its surveillance and response efforts as Mpox cases rise, sparking concerns of cross-border transmission.

The outbreak, driven by a more virulent strain from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), has put neighboring countries on high alert.

The Ugandan government has swiftly designated over 20 districts along the DRC border as high-risk areas. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to contain the virus, which has seen a 160% increase in cases across Africa compared to the previous year.

"From the experience of Uganda responding to epidemics like COVID-19 and Ebola virus disease, we are confident that the country will keep Mpox at bay," said Hans von Schroeder, the Deputy German Ambassador to Uganda.

To bolster its response, Uganda is intensifying training for health workers and enhancing laboratory capabilities to quickly detect and isolate suspected Mpox cases. Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng, Uganda’s Minister of Health, highlighted the country’s proven track record in managing epidemics.

“As demonstrated by our ability to contain the 2022 Ebola disease outbreak in a record 69 days, it's important that the international and global partners have confidence in Uganda’s commitments to contain the Mpox outbreak and protect its neighbors and the world at large,” she remarked.

Recognizing the global implications, Uganda is working closely with WHO to access life-saving vaccines as part of its preparedness plan.

The World Health Organization has already declared Mpox a public health emergency of international concern, emphasizing the urgent need for international cooperation.

Susan Namondo, UN Resident Coordinator in Uganda, reaffirmed the United Nations’ commitment to supporting Uganda in this critical time.

“The UN in Uganda, through its various agencies, stands in solidarity with the people and government of Uganda. We are committed to supporting the Ministry of Health and all stakeholders in the fight against the Mpox virus outbreak,” she said, underscoring the importance of collaborative efforts in managing the crisis.
