The Microfinance Support Centre (MSC) has partnered with Hoima Catholic Diocese to launch the St. Theresa Demonstration Farm, a piggery project in Kasunga Village, Mugarama Sub-county, Kibale District to provide people with practical knowledge about piggery farming.
This is part of their mandate to collaborate with faith-based institutions to foster socio-economic transformation and promote community financing.
The launch on Saturday began with a mass led by retired Bishop Nathan Kyamanywa of the Bunyoro Kitara Diocese before Kibale Woman MP, Dr. Emely Kugonza officially launched the farm on behalf of the Minster of Finance Matia Kasaija.
Speaking at the launch, Tadeo Atuhura the head of communications at MSC noted that their partnership with the Catholic church is an approach to ensure that they fight poverty and ensure wealth creation.
"The sole purpose is to be able to partner with faith based institutions, like now the Catholic Church so that they can be able to help us reach out to the people and they learn and then at the end of it all, our core is about wealth creation. We know when incomes of the poor are boosted, they are able to create wealth and when you create wealth through these enterprises, you also provide jobs for the young people, so that they can sustain themselves at the end of the day."
Atuhura noted that the purpose of this demonstration farm, is to equip the people of Kibale with the knowledge on how to look after pigs.
"You might want to start up an enterprise in piggery farming, for instance, poultry, but then you don't have the skill and the knowledge of how you can be able to run that. So our purpose is that we give people the skills and the knowledge so they get to understand that this is practical. The demonstration farms like this give you practical knowledge of how do you look after a pig."
He announced that they have donated 100 pigs to 20 SACCOS, which have been trained on proper care. They are hopeful that about 5,000 households will benefit from this project.
"We have been able to give out 100 pigs and these pigs are going to the groups and it's like seed, these pigs we're not giving to them to go and eat. We are going to monitor everything that Microfinance Support Center gives out with monitoring framework. We will follow through, walk with them and guide them to ensure that they are able to create the impact that we're looking for," Atuhura said.
Dr. Emely Kugonza, the Kibale district MP who represented Hon Matia Kasaija appealed to the beneficiaries to embrace the project and do what it takes to produce good results and encourage others to also take on the project.
"What is being given to you is a seed. We've just witnessed very high quality piglets of cambra family and we appeal to you to embrace the project and also those that are among the first beneficiaries should do what it takes to ensure they deliver good results to encourage others to be able to take on the project because what is intended is that 'it shouldn't end with them, but it should start with them. You should multiply the piglets that you have taken such that many other beneficiaries within the groups within the Saccos can be able to benefit," Kugonza said.
The MP hailed Microfinance Support Centre, Hoima Diocese and Dr Ali Bakiza who donated the land where the farm is established for their efforts towards getting people out of poverty.
Godwin Akiiki the RDC kibale district said that this farm will act as an incubator for all beneficiaries of government programs particularly Emyooga.
"We are going to benefits as government in training our beneficiaries."
