Nyimbwa Health Center IV in Luweero District has received a Shs600 million medicine store constructed by the Ministry of Health, alongside a rickshaw (Tuk-Tuk) ambulance donated by the Melissa Prandi Children Foundation, to strengthen healthcare service delivery at the facility.
Serving as the Health Sub-District for Katikamu South Constituency, Nyimbwa Health Center IV provides medicines and medical support to over 30 government and private health facilities.
Luweero District Health Officer Innocent Nkonwa explained the previous challenges:
“We receive medicines worth over Shs200 million every year, but the facility has long struggled with inadequate storage space. This has made it difficult to properly store and distribute medicines to the health units we serve,” he said.
Dr Irene Nakiranda, in charge of the facility, highlighted the volume of patients:
“Our outpatient department attends to at least 2,000 patients every month and we also register about 160 deliveries. This clearly shows the need for sufficient medicines and proper storage facilities to ensure safety and effective service delivery,” she said.
Dr. Nakiranda also noted challenges with water and emergency response:
“The lack of reliable water and an ambulance has been a big challenge, especially when handling emergencies and referrals,” she said.
The Melissa Prandi Children Foundation also addressed these gaps. Foundation director Mike Kironde said:
“In addition to donating the tukutuku ambulance, we also connected running water to the facility and renovated some old structures to improve operations and ensure smooth service delivery.”
Ronald Baguma, Business Distribution Manager at Housing Finance Bank, was not involved in this project but reflects similar community support initiatives: “Through projects like this, we continue to advance the Sustainable Development Goals… Together, we are building a brighter, healthier, and more hopeful future for our children.”
Health officials believe that the new medicine store and ambulance will improve healthcare services at Nyimbwa Health Centre IV and strengthen support to the more than 30 facilities that depend on it for medicines and medical supplies.
