Residents of Ibanda District have been urged to prioritise safe and responsible sexual health practices as Uganda joined the global community in marking International Condom Day on Thursday.
Observed annually on February 13, International Condom Day promotes the use of condoms as an effective method of preventing HIV, other sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and unintended pregnancies. This year’s national celebrations were held in Fort Portal City under the theme, “Just Use It.”
During a community engagement in Ibanda District, Juliet Kyomuhendo, a Health Inspector and HIV/Condom Focal Person, underscored the significance of the day in raising awareness about personal health responsibility and HIV prevention.
“International Condom Day reminds us of our responsibility to protect ourselves and our partners. The correct and consistent use of condoms is one of the most effective ways to reduce HIV transmission,” Kyomuhendo said.
She noted that although condoms are widely available at health facilities, inconsistent and incorrect use continues to undermine their effectiveness.
“Using condoms correctly every time is essential for effective protection and better sexual health outcomes. It is not enough to use a condom occasionally; consistency is key,” she added.
Kyomuhendo further encouraged residents, particularly young people, to seek accurate information on sexual and reproductive health and to make informed decisions that protect their future.
Health officials emphasised that International Condom Day is not only a reminder about prevention but also a platform to combat stigma, promote open dialogue about sexual health, and improve access to condoms within communities.
As Uganda intensifies efforts to reduce new HIV infections, leaders in Ibanda District have called on communities to extend the message beyond the annual commemoration and integrate safe sexual practices into their daily lives.
