In the episode of Salam TV's Obulamu health talk show, Nursing Officer and midwife Nassak Lailah shed light on the growing concern of Postpartum Depression (PPD), a condition affecting many new mothers.
Hosted by Mariam Businge, the discussion aimed to sensitize the public about mental health issues, specifically PPD, a psychiatric illness occurring after childbirth. Lailah emphasized that all women, regardless of age, marital status, education, or economic background, are vulnerable to PPD.
Lailah explained that PPD can manifest during the postpartum period, which is divided into early (0-7 days) and late (6 weeks to 6 months) stages. Hormonal changes, including fluctuations in estrogen, Sprogesterone, and prolactin levels, can contribute to PPD.
The expert highlighted several risk factors, including:
Marital dissatisfaction, Stressful events, such as loss of a loved one or a sick baby, Inadequate social support, History of depression, or family history of PPD
Symptoms of PPD can range from mild to severe and include restlessness, irritability, insomnia, and shifting moods. In severe cases, women may experience delusions or hallucinations, posing a risk to themselves or their babies.
Lailah emphasized that treatment depends on the severity and symptoms, ranging from non-pharmacological counseling and support therapy to antidepressants and mood stabilizers. Prevention strategies include offering prophylactic treatment near or at the time of delivery.
The expert debunked common misconceptions about PPD, such as attributing it to adultery, witchcraft, or laziness. Lailah stressed that mental health matters and seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness.
By raising awareness about PPD, Lailah's insights aim to encourage new mothers to prioritize their mental health and seek support when needed.
