In a major boost to Uganda's healthcare sector, the Uganda Heart Institute has launched its brand-new Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory, enabling cutting-edge diagnosis and treatment of various heart conditions.
This development marks a significant milestone in advancing cardiac care in the country.
According to Dr. Diana Atwine, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, this state-of-the-art facility will precisely diagnose and treat coronary artery diseases, heart valve issues, and congenital defects.
The Uganda Heart Institute, established in 1958, has grown from a simple cardiac clinic to a fully-fledged facility and the only national referral center for heart diseases in Uganda.
Dr. Atwine says that with this new laboratory, the institute reinforces its commitment to providing top-notch cardiovascular services.
This advancement is expected to reduce the need for Ugandans to seek medical care abroad, aligning with the National Development Plan's goal of reducing referrals abroad to less than 5% .
The Uganda Heart Institute has already made significant strides in cardiac care, performing over 7,000 heart operations since 2007.
