Ugandan bakery chef Walinda Jonathan has risen to international prominence, positioning himself as one of East Africa’s most influential young culinary talents after breaking into Saudi Arabia’s rapidly expanding luxury gastronomy industry.
Born in Kakiri, Wakiso District, the 24-year-old chef has built a career that now places him on the global fine-dining map, where he is increasingly viewed as an ambassador for African culinary innovation.
Jonathan, who works as a bakery chef, culinary consultant, and digital creator, is widely recognised as the first East African bakery chef to receive official TikTok verification, a milestone that significantly expanded his reach across international digital food platforms.
His global profile grew further in late 2025 when he joined the elite culinary operations of world-renowned multi-Michelin-star chef Alain Ducasse in Riyadh, a move regarded as one of the most significant achievements of his career.
Raised in Kakiri by his parents, Norah Namuddu and Francis Walinda, Jonathan credits his discipline and creative drive to his upbringing in Uganda, where food, culture, and experimentation were central to family life.
“My parents taught me discipline, teamwork, and the joy of experimenting with ingredients,” Jonathan says. “Those early lessons built the foundation I stand on today.”
His baking philosophy sets him apart in the competitive pastry world. Jonathan approaches pastry as visual art, often working with white as a central theme to emphasise purity, simplicity, and creative clarity.
“White is my canvas,” he explains. “It highlights the natural colours and textures of bread and pastry without overshadowing them.”
After completing professional culinary training, Jonathan relocated to Saudi Arabia to sharpen his skills in artisan baking.
His breakthrough came at NUA Restaurant, operated under the Almadina Heritage Company, where he gained recognition for blending East African flavour profiles with refined Middle Eastern pastry techniques.
Local and regional media praised his approach as bold yet elegant, with some outlets describing him as one of the most exciting young pastry innovators in Saudi Arabia’s gourmet dining scene.
In 2025, Jonathan reached a milestone few chefs achieve when he was recruited into the culinary operations of Alain Ducasse, the chef credited with holding more Michelin stars than any other living culinary figure.
Ducasse’s expansion into the Middle East aligns with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 strategy, which prioritises global hospitality standards, cultural exchange, and world-class dining experiences.
“Being trusted by the Ducasse team is both an honour and a responsibility,” Jonathan says. “It motivates me to show that African chefs can shine on the biggest stages of global fine dining.”
His appointment places him among a small group of African chefs operating at the highest levels of international gastronomy.
Beyond professional kitchens, Jonathan has built a strong digital presence by producing detailed educational content on dough fermentation, lamination, pastry design, and modern baking techniques.
His videos have attracted a wide audience across East Africa, the Gulf region, and parts of Europe, helping demystify fine pastry craftsmanship for young chefs.
TikTok’s verification of his account, the first for an East African bakery chef, marked a significant moment for African culinary creators and signalled a growing shift in global digital food culture.
Culinary analysts say his success demonstrates that African chefs can thrive in online spaces long dominated by Western and Asian creators.
Jonathan’s journey has been widely covered in Ugandan and regional media, earning him admiration among aspiring chefs across the continent and within the diaspora.
“This achievement gives me hope,” he says. “In the next few years, I believe I will become Africa’s number one bakery, chocolate, and pastry chef in French cuisine.”
As his international profile continues to grow, Jonathan says he hopes to establish his own bakery and chocolate shop in the future, adding that his long-term goal is to help elevate African representation in global culinary excellence.
