Evangelist cum journalist Joseph Kabuleta has been released on police bond after for days in detention, the Nile Post has learnt.
Kabuleta was arrested by plain clothed security operatives on Friday at a restaurant in Lugogo before being detained at the Special Investigations Division in Kireka.
On Tuesday evening, after four days in detention, the evangelist was released by police and according to the police spokesperson, Fred Enanga, Kabuleta was granted a police bond.
Kabuleta’s release followed a harbeas corpus application filed by his lawyers asking court to issue orders to the Attorney General, Inspector General of Police and the Special Investigations Division to produce him dead or alive.
The Director of Public Prosecutions, Mike Chibita on Tuesday told journalists that his office had received Kabuleta’s case file but noted they are yet to finalise with examining it before arraigning him in court.
“It is true we received the file but it is still under perusal and a decision has not yet been taken on what to do next with it,”Chibita said.
He however said Kabuleta’s case is of public interest and that the file would be worked upon expeditiously.
“We will ensure before the week is over, the decision is made,”Chibita noted.
Police spokesperson, Fred Enanga on Friday said Kabuleta had been arrested for ridiculing President Museveni on social media by referring to him as a thief and gambler.
“According to preliminary information, the writer (Kabuleta) posted grossly offensive messages, under “Joseph Kabuleta Weekly Rant Returns” referring to the fountain of honour as a “Gambler, Thief and Liar”. Section 25 of the Computer Misuse Act, 2011 criminalises such acts of communication,”Enanga said
