Former Mulago Hospital Executive Director’s death not caused by Doctors’s strike- Management

Dr. Lawrence Kaggwa,68 who was the former Executive Director for Mulago Hospital has died.

According to Dr.John Omangino, the Executive Director, Uganda Heart Institute at Mulago, the former national referral hospital boss died at around 9am on Friday.

“It true he passed away this morning of cardio respiratory failure,”Dr.Omangino told the Nile Post in a phone interview.

Dr. Omangino explained that the deceased was battling with problems related to the heart but he however denied reports that the death was caused by the ongoing strike by doctors.

“The heart institute by the virtue of its work can’t be on strike,” he said.

Dr Kaggwa was the Mulago national referral hospital boss for 12 years from 1993 to 2005.

 

Biography

Dr.Lawrence Kaggwa was born in April 1948 to Dominic Njala and Dorotia Nalubwama at Kiryasaka village in Masaka district.

 

He studied at Buyoga Primary School, St.Henry’s College Kitovu and St.Mary’s college Kisubi before joining Makerere University medical school in 1969 to 1974.

 

Dr.Kaggwa would later join Mulago hospital as an internship student but was later posted to Kitagata hospital. He completed a master’s degree in surgery in 1980 and in 1993 he was appointed the Executive Director Mulago hospital,a position he served until 2005.
