EC Approves Registration of Katonga's PFF Party

The decision follows persistent efforts by a faction of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) that has broken away and established its base in Katonga, Kampala.

The Electoral Commission (EC) has approved the registration of the Katonga faction political organisation, the People’s Freedom Front (PFF).

The decision follows persistent efforts by a faction of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) that has broken away and established its base in Katonga, Kampala.

An insider, who spoke on condition of anonymity, revealed that the EC led by Justice Simon Byabakama convened a closed-door meeting to address the registration request after multiple unannounced visits from the FDC Katonga faction.

The group has been actively advocating for the PFF's registration in anticipation of the 2026 general elections, asserting that the new party will provide an alternative political platform for Ugandans dissatisfied with the current political climate.

Initially, the Electoral Commission had rejected the PFF's registration, citing its similarities to the already registered People Power Front (PPF) and concerns over the proposed blue colour scheme resembling that of the FDC.

The Commission had advised the promoters of the PFF to modify the party name and colors to prevent confusion with existing political entities.

However, the faction remained steadfast and threatened legal action if their demands were not met.

A breakthrough occurred after a series of intense discussions, culminating in the EC's meeting on Thursday to finalize its decision.

According to the insider, the Commission reviewed its previous communications with the FDC Katonga group and ultimately opted to grant permission for the registration process to proceed.

With the EC's approval, the promoters of the PFF will now embark on collecting the necessary signatures to formalise their registration.

However, the Electoral Commission has emphasised that these signatures will undergo a stringent verification process to ensure authenticity and prevent forgeries.

This development heralds the debut of the People’s Freedom Front on Uganda's political stage, potentially altering alliances and dynamics as the country gears up for the 2026 general elections.
