Makerere University has lifted the suspension handed to Makerere University Academic Staff Association chairman, Dr.Deus Kamunyu early this year.
In January, Makerere University Vice Chancellor Prof Barnabas Nawangwe suspended Kamunyu for taking part in activities said to amount to misconduct including inciting strikes at the university but the latter dragged the university challenging the manner in which he was suspended.
On Wednesday, the university announced that after negotiations with Kamunyu, they had reached a consent agreement that included lifting of his suspension.
“As part of the consent, the suspension of Dr.Muhwezi has been lifted and he shall submit to the internal disciplinary processes before the Appointments Board,” said the Makerere University spokesperson, Dr.Muhammad Kiggundu.
“The University reassures all staff and stakeholders that the handling of any disciplinary matters shall adhere to the principles of natural justice, fairness and equity.”
Meanwhile, both parties communicated to the High Court in regards the consent agreement they had reached at.
Dr.Kamunyu confirmed lifting of the suspension but noted that he will now submit to the Appointments Board processes since it had initiated fresh charges against him.
Following the suspension of the MUASA chairman and other staff leaders at Makerere University, lecturers laid down their tools requesting management to rescind their decision.
The lecturers insisted that Makerere University Vice Chancellor, Prof.Barnabas Nawangwe was wrong on suspending their leaders and vowed that they would never step foot in lecture rooms.
Consequently, Nawangwe later recommended to the University council to close indefinitely, the school of law for fueling the lecturers’ strike.
“Given the position taken by the school of law to defy authority and incite the rest of the university to follow their bad example, it is recommended that the school of law be closed indefinitely,” Prof. Nawangwe said in his report to the university.
