Soroti Vocational Training Institute (SVTI) has marked another milestone in Uganda’s technical and vocational education sector by graduating 644 students at its second official ceremony.
Speaking to the graduates, Chief Trainer Eng. Rev. Julius Apedu urged them to embrace discipline, integrity, and innovation in their careers.
He warned against greed and called for accountability and transparency as they pursue professional excellence.
Founded in 1989 by the Church of Uganda as a Village Technology Center, the institute became a fully registered Vocational Training Institute in 2005.
With 846 students currently enrolled, Rev. Apedu expressed optimism about achieving full government accreditation despite challenges such as limited infrastructure, inadequate equipment, and staffing gaps.
He acknowledged the support of Bishop Kosea Odongo, who is sponsoring over 40 students, describing it as a significant boost to SVTI’s mission of empowering young people with practical skills.
Rev. Apedu also revealed plans to introduce diploma-level courses next year and appealed for subsidized training materials to ease financial burdens on learners.
The graduation ceremony highlighted inspiring stories from students.
John Ekamu, 23, a catering student who had previously dropped out of primary school, expressed gratitude for completing his certificate and pledged to pursue his dream of becoming a chief chef.
Beatrice Alupo credited her success to God, her family, and her instructors, and said she hopes to continue her education.
Graduates from the 2023 and 2024 academic years completed programs in carpentry, fashion design, hairdressing, catering, plumbing, and other hands-on disciplines.
Board Chair Eng. Paul Godfrey Angeret commended government reforms in technical education and urged graduates to uphold quality in their work.
Bishop Odongo encouraged them to innovate, serve their communities, and aim higher academically and professionally.
Patty Emokori, Principal Education Officer for Soroti City, called on the new graduates to build strong reputations rooted in both skill and character.
Representing State Minister for Sports Peter Ogwang, RCC John Michael Okurut praised the institute for shaping employable youth and announced plans to upgrade SVTI into a fully funded public institution.
The colorful ceremony celebrated the resilience, hard work, and potential of hundreds of young Ugandans, poised to contribute to community transformation through vocational skills.
