Police in Mukono have launched investigations into the sudden death of Henry Kitata, a parish councillor from Katente Parish in Nakisunga Sub-county, who collapsed during a swearing-in ceremony and was later pronounced dead at a medical facility.
Kitata, a resident of Namakwa Village in Katente Parish, served as the Directly Elected Councillor for Katente Parish and was also contesting for the position of Speaker of Nakisunga Sub-county.
According to police, the councillor had been unwell for three days prior to his death and had been receiving treatment.
"Preliminary reports indicate that the deceased had been sick for the last three days and was undergoing treatment. His condition had reportedly improved," Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson SP Racheal Kawala said.
Police said Kitata left his home on May 29, 2026, to attend a swearing-in ceremony at the Nakisunga Sub-county headquarters after showing signs of recovery.
However, while attending the function, his health suddenly deteriorated, causing concern among fellow leaders and residents who were present.
"While at the event, his condition suddenly worsened, prompting those present to rush him to Herona Medical Centre for emergency medical attention," Kawala explained.
Despite efforts to save his life, Kitata was pronounced dead upon arrival at the health facility.
His death has shocked residents and local leaders across Nakisunga Sub-county, where he was regarded as an active community leader and a contender for the influential position of sub-county speaker.
Police have since transferred the body to Mulago National Referral Hospital for a post-mortem examination to establish the exact cause of death.
"The body has been conveyed to Mulago National Referral Hospital for a post-mortem examination to establish the exact cause of death. Investigations into the matter are ongoing," Kawala added.
Authorities have urged the public to remain calm as investigations continue and medical experts work to determine the circumstances surrounding Kitata's death.
