Police have launched a manhunt for armed robbers who attacked a mobile money agent in Kasambya Town Council, making off with cash, banking equipment and agent lines after injuring the victim and firing bullets into the air.

A mobile money and banking agent in Mubende District survived death after he was attacked and robbed by armed assailants in Kasambya Town Council on Tuesday night.

According to Wamala Regional Police spokesperson, Lameck Kigozi, the victim, identified as 44-year-old Vincent Taremwa, was ambushed at around 7:40pm near a junction leading to Brac Bank in Kasambya Town Council.

Police said two unidentified men riding on a motorcycle confronted Taremwa as he was heading home and ordered him to surrender a bag containing money and banking equipment.

“The suspects cut his left palm with a knife when he resisted handing over the bag,” Kigozi said in a statement issued on Wednesday.

Police added that the robbers fired bullets into the air to overpower the victim before fleeing with the bag.

Items stolen included agent banking machines for Centenary Bank and DTB, two mobile phones containing agent lines, and Shs9 million in cash.

Taremwa later reported the incident to Kasambya Police Station before seeking medical treatment at a nearby clinic.

Police detectives visited and documented the scene, where a cartridge was recovered, confirming that the attackers were armed with an AK-47 rifle.

Statements from witnesses have since been recorded as investigations continue.

“The hunt for the robbers is on,” Kigozi said.

Police warned mobile money and banking agents to strengthen their personal security, noting that such operators are increasingly targeted by criminals who believe they move with large sums of cash.

Security agencies in recent years have repeatedly raised concern over rising attacks on mobile money operators across Uganda, with many robberies linked to armed gangs trailing agents after business hours.
