A man is nursing gunshot injuries after he was allegedly shot by a police officer during a brawl at a bar in Kotido.
Mathias Locheng Aporu was reportedly partying at Chillers Bar when a scuffle broke out, allegedly over a disagreement involving a girlfriend.
According to eyewitness accounts, the altercation escalated, leading to the Officer in Charge of Kotido Police Station, SP Devis Mugusajja, discharging a firearm and injuring Aporu.
The victim was taken to Kotido Hospital, where he is receiving treatment.
His condition is not serious, this website has been told.
Local leaders condemned the incident, calling for restraint and professionalism among security officers, especially in public spaces.
Julius Dida, the Office of the National Chairman (ONC) Coordinator for Karamoja, said such actions threaten the stability the region has worked hard to achieve.
“Such acts derail the hard-earned peace that the President and the NRM government have brought to Karamoja,” Dida said.
He called on authorities to take action against the officer involved and ensure justice for the victim.
“The police should arrest the suspect and ensure the injured victim is compensated,” he added.
By press time, police had not yet issued an official statement regarding the incident.
