Police in the Wamala sub-region have intensified operations against cattle theft following a late-night interception that led to the recovery of stolen livestock and the arrest of a suspect.
According to Lameck Kigozi, the Wamala Region Police spokesperson, officers on patrol at around 3:00 a.m. in Kisiita village, Kigando Sub-county, Mubende District, mounted a snap checkpoint along the Butawata–Kuminamukaaga road. They stopped a white Toyota Noah, registration number UA 397 AR, suspected to be transporting stolen livestock.
“The occupants of the vehicle jumped out and fled on foot when the vehicle was stopped,” Kigozi said. “Police, with the help of vigilant residents, pursued the suspects and successfully arrested one individual identified as Ayesiga Christopher, a resident of Hoima.”
A search of the vehicle revealed a black-and-white bull tied up and concealed under a tarpaulin. During interrogation, the suspect reportedly disclosed that they were operating in two vehicles.
“Acting on this information, officers attempted to pursue the second vehicle,” Kigozi added. “Although it evaded capture, a black cow was later found abandoned and tied along the road in Kabateza village. The animal has since been recovered.”
Police have recorded statements from officers involved, witnesses, and the suspect. The recovered animals and the vehicle have been secured as exhibits to aid ongoing investigations.
Kigozi emphasized that efforts are underway to apprehend the remaining suspects and recover the second vehicle.
“The Wamala Region Police remain committed to eliminating cattle theft, a vice that has long deprived farmers of the fruits of their labor,” he said.
Cattle theft remains a persistent challenge in parts of central Uganda, with security agencies increasingly relying on joint operations with local communities to curb the crime.
