Police in the North West Nile region have launched investigations into the brutal killing of a 35-year-old South Sudanese refugee in Bidibidi Refugee Settlement, Yumbe District.

The deceased, identified as Charles Boni, was reportedly attacked in the early hours of April 19, 2026, at around 12:30 a.m. in Village 18, Zone 5.

According to preliminary findings, Boni was inside his home with his wife when unknown assailants knocked at the door. When he opened, he was forcibly dragged outside and attacked.

His wife, whose identity has been withheld for security reasons, told authorities that she witnessed about six men assaulting her husband with sticks, inflicting severe head injuries that led to his death. She also alleged that one of the attackers was armed with a pistol.

The assailants reportedly stole her mobile phone before fleeing the scene. Despite her alarm, no immediate response was received from nearby residents.

Police from Yumbe Police Station responded to the scene, documented evidence, and recorded witness statements as investigations commenced. The body was later transferred to Yumbe Regional Referral Hospital for postmortem examination.

Investigators also recovered a live round of pistol ammunition at the scene, which authorities say may provide key leads in the ongoing probe.

North West Nile Regional Police Spokesperson SP Collins Asea  condemned the attack, describing it as a “violent and unfortunate incident.”

“This was a very unfortunate and violent incident. We strongly condemn such acts of lawlessness, and we want to assure the public that investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend the suspects,” he said.

He urged residents to cooperate with security agencies by sharing any information that could assist in identifying the attackers.

“We appeal to anyone with credible information to come forward and assist the police. Community vigilance is critical in helping us prevent and respond to such crimes,” SP Asea added.

The motive behind the killing remains unknown, and police say inquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the attack.

Authorities have reiterated their commitment to improving security within refugee settlements and surrounding communities as investigations continue.
