Police in Moyo District are investigating a shocking case of attempted murder after a newborn baby was rescued alive from a pit latrine at Moyo General Hospital.
The incident, registered under CRB 103/2026 at Moyo Central Police Station, occurred on the night of April 9, 2026. According to police, hospital staff were alerted after hearing a baby crying from inside one of the facility’s pit latrines.
Officers responded swiftly, secured the scene, and successfully retrieved the infant alive.
The North West Nile Regional Police spokesperson, SP Collins Asea, confirmed the incident and praised the quick response of both hospital staff and police.
“Our officers responded promptly after receiving information from the hospital. The baby boy was rescued alive, and necessary medical attention was immediately provided,” SP Asea said.
Police collected blood samples from the scene and the infant to support forensic investigations, while the scene was documented by detectives and the District Scene of Crime Officer.
A female suspect, only identified as Christine, was arrested at the scene and is currently under police guard at Moyo General Hospital.
“Preliminary findings indicate that the suspect admitted to giving birth to the child and, due to personal distress and fear of raising the baby alone, decided to abandon him,” SP Asea revealed.
He added that efforts are ongoing to trace the suspect’s relatives in Terego District, where she reportedly moved from before settling in Moyo District.
“We condemn such acts and urge members of the public to seek help from authorities or community structures in times of distress instead of resorting to harmful actions,” he emphasized.
Police say investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident, with more details expected as inquiries continue.
