At least 25 suspects in Ibanda District have been remanded to Nyabuhikye Government Prison following a joint security operation aimed at curbing rising crime in the area.
The operation, conducted last week by a combined team of police and the military, targeted individuals suspected of engaging in criminal activities, including pickpocketing, highway robbery, theft, and housebreaking.
The Resident District Commissioner of Ibanda, Godfrey Mbetegyereize, confirmed the development, stating that the crackdown was prompted by growing public concern over insecurity.
“We carried out a joint operation with the police and the military and managed to arrest 25 suspects over offenses such as pickpocketing, highway robbery, theft, and housebreaking,” he said.
Mbetegyereize explained that the operation was intended to restore calm and improve safety in the district following numerous complaints from residents.
The crackdown followed concerns raised by the public over increasing crime rates, which prompted the intervention of the Assistant Inspector General of Police and Chief Political Commissar, Ubaldo Bamunoba.
The suspects remain on remand as investigations continue.
“The suspects are currently on remand as inquiries proceed, and the operation itself is ongoing to ensure that all those involved in criminal activities are brought to book,” Mbetegyereize added.
Security agencies have reassured the public of their commitment to maintaining law and order and have urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities.
