The Greater Bushenyi Region Police have launched investigations into the mysterious deaths of 53 cattle, amid allegations of deliberate poisoning targeting local livestock farmers.
According to Regional Police Spokesperson Apollo Tayebwa, a General Enquiry File (GEF) has been opened to examine incidents occurring between June 2025 and February 2026.
Preliminary findings suggest unknown individuals administered hot water to cattle during the night, leaving the animals weakened.
The suspects allegedly returned later to purchase the affected animals at low prices before slaughtering them and selling the meat through local butcheries.
The scheme came to light on February 16, 2026, around 11:00 p.m., when Lawrence Turihamwe, a farmer in Kyandiko Village, Kajuju Parish, Kyabugimbi Sub-county, Bushenyi District, discovered a suspect, identified as Gordan Turyasingura, inside his farm carrying a jerrycan of water near the cattle enclosure.
The suspect fled, leaving behind a mobile phone recovered by Turihamwe, and the incident was immediately reported to Kyabugimbi Police Station.
Investigations have since revealed a pattern of unexplained livestock deaths affecting at least eight farmers since June 2025.
Among the affected farmers:
- Edith Kihembo
- Francio Magezi – lost two cows in December 2025
- Abias Kiriga – lost 15 cows between June and November 2025
- Honest Abenawe – lost two cows in December 2025
- Moses Kabashekye Mugume – lost 30 cows from 2024 to date
- Appolo Muhwezi – lost three cows between September and November 2025
- Felix Kamugisha – lost two cows in December 2025
- Lauben Natweta – lost one cow
Turihamwe had previously lost six cows over a four-month period and strongly suspects Turyasingura’s involvement.
Most of the victims and the prime suspect reside in Sheema District, particularly Kyabugimbi Sub-county, heightening community concern.
“We are treating this matter with the seriousness it deserves. Our teams are conducting thorough investigations to establish the full facts, identify all those involved, and ensure they are brought to justice,” said SP Tayebwa.
Police have urged farmers to enhance security on their farms, remain vigilant, and promptly report any suspicious activity while investigations continue.
