Police Detain Two Officers Over Role in Motorcycle Theft Ring in Hoima

Two police officers attached to Hoima Central Police Station have been arrested over alleged involvement in a motorcycle theft racket, after Flying Squad operatives uncovered a chain linking suspects, a local dealer and the officers.

Police are holding two of their own officers over allegations of involvement in a series of motorcycle thefts and robberies in the Albertine South Region.

The arrested officers have been identified as Assistant Inspector of Police (AIP) Denis Semaganda, the officer in charge of CCTV at Hoima Central Police Station, and Police Constable (PC) Elias Kamugisha, who was also attached to the same station.

Their arrest follows an earlier operation by the Flying Squad, which apprehended two suspects, Wycliff Mbabazi and Sam Tukamushaba.

During interrogation, the suspects reportedly confessed to stealing motorcycles and selling them to a local mechanic and dealer identified as Kasiimu.

According to investigators, Kasiimu also allegedly disclosed that he had been purchasing additional motorcycles from the two police officers.

It is claimed that AIP Semaganda and PC Kamugisha sold him several motorcycles, including registration number UEY 749W for Shs1.8 million, UFL 568Q for Shs1.5 million and a TVS motorcycle for Shs200,000.

Julius Hakiza, the police spokesperson for the Albertine region, confirmed the arrests and said investigations are ongoing to establish the full extent of the alleged criminal network and verify the claims made by the suspects.

He said further details will be provided as inquiries progress.
