Police have started investigating claims that a group of security operatives are behind the abduction of members of the public with an aim of linking them to machete attacks.
In videos and audios shared on social media by popular comedian Sammy Okanya, a female and male voice are heard claiming that private vehicles have on several occasions been seen moving around Buddo areas in Kyengera town council where occupants, who are in plain clothes allegedly abduct locals and bundle them into the waiting vehicles.
“On bundling our colleagues in the vehicles, they are driven to Nakasozi Police Post and forced to hold pangas and their photos taken. Those who refuse and severely beaten inside the police post,” one of the reporters in the videos is heard saying.
The videos which have since gone viral on social media have asked members of the public to beware and in any case, take action against Nakasozi Police Post.
Commenting about the videos, Police spokesperson, Kituuma Rusoke said they have started investigating the claims made in the videos.
“It may look like videos by reckless nobodies but we don’t take their message lightly. There might be organized group trying to send political messages or real criminals. It might be reverse psychology at play,” Rusoke said.
He said whereas the Nakasozi Police Post being mentioned in the video is currently under renovation, they have since contacted all relevant authorities including Local Council leaders in the area who say don’t know these two people and don’t have any information about these allegations.
Kituuma said police highly suspects these claims are made by individuals on social media who are looking for content.
“We think these allegations are made by individuals looking for content. Someone wants to be known and followed by many people on social media and chooses an alarming subject. We warn that security is a very delicate matter. If found that these people were looking for fame, it would be irresponsible and subversive.”
“We shall not draw conclusions but these allegations will be investigated and appropriate action taken. If you play with security in such a manner know it is risky on your side. It will come with consequences. Should we find this was false and intended to be alarmist, somebody will answer.”
