Buganda Kingdom Launches Kibuga Online E-Commerce Platform

The Buganda Kingdom, through its telecom arm K2 Telecom, has launched Kibuga Online, a new e-commerce platform aimed at connecting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to customers across Uganda.

The platform was officially unveiled at Bulange, the kingdom’s administrative headquarters in Mengo.

Speaking at the launch, the Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, described technology as the defining resource of the modern era.

“Technology is the gold and oil of our time,” Mayiga said. “There was a time when wealth was measured by the amount of gold or silver a nation possessed. Later, power was defined by territorial expansion. Today and in the future, global leadership will belong to those who master information and communication technology (ICT).”

He noted that even countries rich in natural resources depend heavily on ICT for extraction, processing, and trade. Citing Uganda’s youthful population — with more than 70 percent under the age of 30 — Mayiga said digital platforms such as Kibuga Online are both timely and necessary.

“E-commerce is about embracing global trends. Buganda cannot afford to be left behind,” he said, adding that increasing smartphone usage and internet penetration make online marketplaces an essential avenue for growth.

Newton Kalera, Board Chairperson of Kibuga Investments Limited, described the initiative as a significant step in aligning cultural heritage with digital transformation.

“This marks a major milestone in promoting digital innovation and economic empowerment,” Kalera said. “In a world where the internet is inseparable from young people, platforms like Kibuga Online provide opportunities for youth to maximize their skills and talents.”

He added that the platform will help bridge the gap between producers and consumers while creating employment opportunities, particularly for young entrepreneurs.

Henry Ndugga, Head of Products at K2 Telecom, said the platform is designed to offer convenience to shoppers while expanding market access for manufacturers and traders.

“If you have a business and want to sell online, this is the platform for you,” Ndugga said. “It enables sellers to expand beyond physical shops and allows customers to shop conveniently from their homes. We are entering the market to bridge the gap between demand and supply.”

Ndugga acknowledged the presence of other e-commerce platforms in Uganda but emphasized that the growing demand for online shopping presents ample opportunity for new entrants.

Kibuga Online is expected to play a key role in accelerating digital commerce within the kingdom and beyond, positioning local enterprises to compete in an increasingly technology-driven economy.
