Street parking payments resume in Hoima amid growing traffic concerns

The Hoima City Council has announced that starting Wednesday, September 18 2024, street parking fees will be reinstated throughout the city.

In a public notice, the City Council stated that payments for street parking, loading, and offloading will be managed by M/S Fuelless Technologies (U) Ltd.

The daily charge remains at Shs 2,000, while the fine for non-compliance has been reduced from Shs 50,000 to Shs 30,000 after seven days of default.

The city’s administration emphasised that all free parking stickers have been canceled, and until new guidelines are issued, all vehicles must adhere to the street parking fees.

"All illegal free parking slots will be closed. Let us all pay for street parking to bring order on the streets as we develop our beloved Oil City," stated the City Town Clerk, Godfrey Kisekka.

Motorists are urged to comply with the new regulations to avoid penalties and ensure order in the city’s streets.

Drivers in Hoima City raised concerns over the increasing number of trucks parked along pavements and streets, leading to traffic jams and accidents.

Across Hoima City's streets, including Main Street, Old Tooro Road, Rukurato Road, and Hoima-Kampala Road, unregulated parking of trucks, boda bodas, and cars has significantly narrowed the roads. This has made it difficult for both pedestrians and vehicles to navigate safely.

The already narrow roads have become accident hotspots as drivers, pedestrians, and motorists struggle to maneuver through congested areas due to double parking.

In 2013, the Hoima Municipal Council contracted Union Networks Uganda to manage street parking fees.

However, their services were halted in 2015 following the commencement of road construction projects under the Uganda Support to Municipal Infrastructure Development (USMID) program.
