Media practitioners, elders, religious and cultural leaders in the Bukedi subregion have been urged to spearhead efforts in raising awareness about export promotion as a key tool to combat poverty in the sub region.

The call was made by Odrek Rwabwogo, the Presidential Advisor on Exports, during a lecture on export promotion strategies delivered to Bukedi population in Tororo.

Rwabwogo, who is leading the Presidential Advisory Committee on Exports Promotion and Development (PACEID), highlighted that poverty has continued to plague Bukedi due to lack of strategic market engagement.

The subregion is currently ranked as the second poorest in Uganda, after Karamoja, which has sparked concerns from both the local leaders and government.

As part of efforts to find a lasting solution, PACEID has pitched camp in Bukedi, aiming to shift the mindset of local leaders to embrace export opportunities.

Rwabwogo emphasized the need for the people of Bukedi to identify and develop marketable products for export, which could provide an avenue for sustained economic growth and poverty alleviation.

“A viable product is key to success in the market,” Rwabwogo remarked, urging the population to explore products that can be cultivated and exported.

The initiative is designed to break the cycle of poverty by empowering residents with the knowledge and tools needed to engage in profitable export activities.

In response to the call, local leaders and elders have expressed interest in exploring cash crops suited to the subregion’s soil. Okoth Nyalulu, a prominent elder from Tororo, suggested that cocoa could be a viable cash crop for Bukedi, given the favorable soil conditions.

However, agricultural experts have warned that in order for Bukedi's exports to be competitive on the global stage, there must be a strong focus on the quality of crops produced to ensure that products produced meet the international standards to achieve a long-term success in export markets.

The PACEID initiative is seen as a crucial step towards empowering the population of Bukedi, providing them with the resources and knowledge needed to elevate their economic prospects through export promotion.

As the campaign to promote exports in Bukedi gains momentum, local leaders are optimistic that the subregion’s poverty levels could significantly decrease, leading to improved livelihoods for its residents.
