Nilotica Shea Alliance Launched to Transform Uganda’s Shea Industry
Uganda’s shea sector has taken a major step toward coordinated growth with the formation of the Nilotica Shea Alliance, a national platform bringing together producers, exporters, researchers, government agencies and development partners to elevate quality standards, expand markets and protect the country’s shea parklands.

Uganda’s shea industry has received a significant boost with the establishment of the Nilotica Shea Alliance (NiSA), a new umbrella body designed to unify and strengthen the country’s rapidly growing nilotica shea value chain.

The Alliance, which is set to be launched on December 3, 2025 in Kampala, brings together producers, processors, traders, exporters, researchers, and government and development agencies in a coordinated effort to promote sustainable production and improve market competitiveness.

NiSA aims to serve as the sector’s collective voice, advancing policy dialogue, supporting market development, and promoting climate-resilient practices that safeguard Uganda’s shea parklands.

With global demand for natural and ethically sourced ingredients rising, the Alliance seeks to position Uganda’s nilotica shea more strategically in regional and international markets.

While nilotica shea is increasingly recognised as one of East Africa’s most valuable natural products—widely used in cosmetics, food and wellness industries—the sector remains fragmented, with inconsistent quality standards and limited technical support for smallholder producers.

NiSA intends to close these gaps by establishing a formal governance structure to oversee quality control, strengthen technical capacity, and guide policy engagement and innovation across the entire value chain.

In a statement, the Alliance said the initiative represents “a vital step in advancing the nilotica shea sector,” adding that coordinated efforts will help drive innovation, improve quality, promote sustainable management of parklands and build stronger market linkages that benefit communities and industry actors.

NiSA was established with leadership from Palladium through the Climate Smart Jobs programme—funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office—in collaboration with the Global Shea Alliance, TASLAF Advocates, the Centre for the Promotion of Imports from Developing Countries, and the International Trade Center under the STAR project financed by KOICA.

The December launch will involve the adoption of NiSA’s constitution, the election of its first Board of Directors and the presentation of a multi-year workplan.

The Alliance is expected to play a central role in positioning shea as a transformative commodity for Uganda and the wider region, with strong potential for value addition, SME growth and expanded export opportunities.

NiSA’s emphasis on sustainable parkland regeneration and climate-smart production is intended to protect Uganda’s shea belt, which continues to face threats from land degradation and commercial tree cutting.

The organisation also places women and marginalised communities at the heart of its work, recognising their essential contribution to shea collection and processing and aiming to expand income-generating opportunities and community-led resource management.

With its broad mandate, NiSA is expected to significantly enhance the competitiveness of Uganda’s shea products in regional and global markets.

By improving data systems, promoting quality standards and deepening engagement with government and development partners, the Alliance seeks to professionalise the sector and support thousands of smallholder producers.

The initiative aligns with the Climate Smart Jobs programme’s focus on market-based solutions for economic resilience and green growth in Northern Uganda, while complementing wider global efforts to promote sustainability and expand demand for shea-based products.

As global interest in natural, ethical and environmentally responsible ingredients continues to rise, the formation of the Nilotica Shea Alliance marks a crucial milestone for Uganda.

Through coordinated action, technical strengthening and environmental stewardship, NiSA is positioning the country’s shea industry for sustained growth and long-term community benefit.
