Political tension surrounding the February 4 local government elections in Luweero District turned violent after unidentified assailants attacked polling officials and robbed sensitive electoral materials in Makulubita Sub-County, raising fresh concerns over election security.
The incident occurred on the night of Wednesday, February 4, 2026, at about 8:30 pm at Joy of Salvation Church polling station in Wesune Muto village, Nsanvu Parish, Katikamu County South, shortly after voting had concluded.
According to police, the attackers, traveling in a silver Toyota Hiace, intercepted a grey Toyota Wish transporting electoral materials from the polling station.
Armed with stones and pangas, the assailants assaulted polling staff and electoral security personnel, destroyed some materials, and escaped with key election items.
The victims were identified as Charles Sseruwu, the driver, who sustained minor injuries, while David Kilegeya and Lawrence Bukenya were seriously injured. Other victims included electoral special polling constables deployed at the station.
The injured were rushed to Makulubita Health Centre III for treatment.
Suspects have been identified, including Ben Kamada and Mududda, among others. A suspect vehicle was later impounded and towed to Luwero Central Police Station, where several exhibits were recovered.
These included identity documents, suspected narcotics, declaration of results forms, party agent tags, and other election-related materials.
However, police confirmed that four biometric voter verification kits and three transparent ballot boxes containing cast ballot papers remain missing.
Savannah Regional Police Spokesperson ASP Sam Twiineamazima said police responded promptly, documented the crime scene, and evacuated the injured.
He added that during the release of the scene, a group believed to be linked to the suspects attempted to re-steal the recovered exhibits, forcing officers to fire warning shots to disperse them.
“Investigations are ongoing to apprehend all suspects, recover the stolen electoral materials, and ensure the integrity of the electoral process,” ASP Twiineamazima said, adding that more inquiries are still at hand, according to the PRO.
