Police have assured the public of safety and order ahead of the local government elections scheduled for January 22, 2026, in Kampala and surrounding areas.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Racheal Kawala said security forces are fully prepared to secure the polls for the Lord Mayor, councillors and district chairpersons.
“Security agencies remain fully committed to ensuring the safety of all citizens during and after the elections,” Kawala said.
She said joint security operations and deployments are ongoing across the metropolitan area, with officers already positioned to prevent disruptions before, during and after voting.
“The priority of the security forces remains the protection of life and property, the maintenance of law and order, and the overall preservation of peace. We are adequately prepared to ensure there are no disruptions at polling stations,” she said.
Kawala warned individuals intending to disrupt the electoral process or engage in violence to desist, saying security agencies will respond firmly to any acts of lawlessness.
“Individuals planning to cause disruptions, violence, or engage in any unlawful acts are strongly warned to desist. Lawlessness will not be tolerated,” she said.
She also called on voters and the general public to cooperate with security personnel and remain peaceful throughout the election period.
“We call upon the public to remain calm, peaceful and cooperative during this time,” Kawala said.
The elections will determine leadership in key city positions, with authorities emphasising that a peaceful environment is critical to ensuring a credible electoral process.
