Ntungamo District is intensifying preparations for the 2026 general elections as the Electoral Commission begins receiving critical non-reusable election materials and advances recruitment and training of polling officials.
The materials already arriving include polling kits such as transparent white ballot boxes and information technology equipment, with additional consignments expected to cater for the welfare of election officials.
According to the Electoral Commission, campaigns across the district are proceeding smoothly, with no complaints reported so far.
The newly appointed Returning Officer for Ntungamo District, Charles Wafula, said candidates are freely canvassing for votes as the official campaign period nears its end.
“Campaigns end on January 13, 2026, and different candidates are in the field looking for votes. I have not had any complaints regarding campaigns as of now,” Wafula said.
He attributed the calm atmosphere to close supervision by Electoral Commission officials at the grassroots level.
“Sub-county supervisors are watching over them and no one has reported anything wrong. So campaigns are going on normally and very well,” he added.
On logistics, Wafula confirmed that the district has started receiving election materials from the Electoral Commission headquarters, noting that the items are designed for single use to protect the integrity of the vote.
“As we speak, we are receiving materials from headquarters and they are non-reusable materials. These include the polling kits or transparent white boxes,” he said.
The district has also received technology to support the conduct of elections.
“We also got the consignment of IT equipment that we are going to use during this process,” Wafula noted.
He said more deliveries are expected in the coming days, particularly supplies intended to support the welfare of polling personnel.
“On the way are other consignments regarding welfare that we keep receiving. The dispatch of polling materials is on,” Wafula said.
Wafula further explained that the Commission is in the final stages of recruiting polling day officials, with interview results currently being assessed.
“We are also very busy with recruitment of polling day officials. My teams are bringing the interview returns that we are going to sit and mark and come out with the best people who are going to conduct the elections,” he said.
Training of election officials is scheduled to begin later this week, starting with senior polling staff.
“I expect on Thursday and Friday we will be training the presiding officers and BVVK operators,” Wafula said, adding that training for polling assistants will be conducted the following week.
