Police intervened to break up a massive rally for National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, in Kawempe on Monday, leaving six security officers injured, officials say.
On Monday, Bobi Wine led the NUP's first rally ahead of Uganda's 2026 elections at Kawempe Growers Playing Ground.
Supporters overflowed venues in Kawempe North and South, chanting for change and showing the opposition’s strong urban backing.
Bobi Wine, who is attempting to break incumbent Yoweri Museveni's stranglehold on power for the second time, first addressed a mammoth crowd in Kawempe South before heading toward Kawempe North for the next scheduled rally.
The procession was blocked by security personnel en route, leading to tensions that peaked when tear gas was used to disperse crowds escorting Kyagulanyi, injuring several.
Police confirmed that stones were thrown at security officers at multiple points, including Bwaise Roundabout, resulting in injuries to six officers and damage to several vehicles, including an ambulance.
"Currently, seven security officers have sustained serious injuries," Police said in a statement. "Several security vehicles were also damaged by the crowd including an ambulance."
Seven suspects have been arrested in connection with the incidents.
NUP leaders condemned the actions as intimidation but praised the turnout as a sign of voter resolve ahead of the 2026 polls.
“The people of Kawempe have shown their determination for change,” a party official said.
Earlier on Monday, police reminded all election candidates to strictly follow campaign guidelines, including avoiding processions and coordinating with authorities to ensure safe and orderly events.
Officials also warned against vandalism, cybercrime, and impersonation by criminals at campaign venues.
Kawempe, part of Kampala’s townships, has historically demonstrated strong support for Bobi Wine, reflecting his popularity across urban centers and Buganda. Monday’s events marked his first major metropolitan rally of the 2026 campaign.
The incidents highlight opposition enthusiasm amid tight security measures, while President Museveni held rival rallies elsewhere in the country. Police emphasized the need for lawfulness, safety, and coordination between candidates and security agencies as nationwide campaigns continue.
