Buikwe NRM Faces Internal Turmoil as Kasolo Moves to Restore Party Discipline

The National Resistance Movement (NRM) in Buikwe District is grappling with persistent internal divisions, prompting the party’s Vice Chairperson for the Buganda Region, Hajj Harunah Kyeyune Kasolo, to convene a high-level meeting with local leaders and parliamentary cardholders.

The move aims to address infighting that sources say threatens the party’s cohesion and electoral strength.

Party insiders indicate that bickering among local leaders has weakened NRM’s standing, leaving the district exposed to opposition gains.

“Those who cannot walk with the party have a few days to resign,” Kasolo warned, stressing the need for unity and discipline among members.

Prominent party figure and former MP Dorah Mpiima noted that Buikwe has historically been an NRM stronghold. However, the last election revealed significant cracks, with President Museveni receiving just 4,000 votes compared to more than 14,000 for NUP’s Robert Kyagulanyi.

“The situation would have worsened without timely reforms,” Mpiima said. “It is critical to address internal wrongs now if NRM is to secure victory in future elections.”

NRM District Chairman Fred Clement Krangwa expressed concern over some cardholders openly supporting opposition parties, warning that such actions endanger the president’s support base. He singled out Minister Diana Mutasingwa Kagyenyi Nankunda and the district MP as key figures allegedly leading the movement against loyal party members, calling for corrective action.

Some candidates blamed Minister Mutasingwa for publicly challenging party unity, noting that while she wields significant influence in Buikwe, the presence of formal district leadership is being undermined.

Others, including Njeru Municipality Mayor Yasin Kyazze, argued that the crisis stems from poor party management at the district level and unclear delineation of responsibilities among leaders.

Kasolo condemned the infighting as unbecoming of NRM leaders and a threat to the party’s dominance. He assured members that steps would be taken to restore discipline and cohesion.

“Opposition victories are often fueled by bitterness and infighting within our own ranks,” he said. “We must unite if we are to protect the party’s achievements and serve our citizens effectively.”

The party leadership is now focused on rebuilding unity in Buikwe and across the Buganda Region, emphasizing that disciplined and cohesive leadership is essential to retaining voter confidence.

Kasolo called on all members to prioritize constructive engagement and loyalty to the party, warning that failure to do so would result in loss of support and influence.

“Our priority is to restore the party’s position in Buikwe and ensure that internal divisions do not compromise our mission,” he added.
