The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced fresh nominations in several electoral areas across the country following the death of some candidates who had already been nominated ahead of the 2026 General Elections.
According to the EC, the new nomination exercise will be conducted on October 27 and 28, 2025, in line with Section 26 of the Parliamentary Elections Act, Cap 177, which provides for fresh nominations where a duly nominated candidate dies before polling day.
In a public notice, the Commission listed four deceased candidates whose passing has prompted the fresh exercise:
- Nyakaana Sulaiman Kanuma – Sub-county Male Older Persons Councillor for Ruyonza Sub-county, Kyeggegwa District (NRM).
- Byamukama David – Sub-county Directly Elected Councillor for Kiremba Parish, Kyeggegwa District (NRM).
- Sera Annet – Sub-county Women Councillor for Bunamujja “A”, Bulambuli District (Independent).
- Nakamanya Racheal – District Woman Councillor for Goma Division, Mukono District (NUP).
The Commission clarified that candidates who had already been duly nominated for the affected positions will not be required to undergo nomination again.
Only new aspirants seeking to replace the deceased candidates will participate in the fresh exercise.
“Aspiring candidates are advised to obtain nomination forms and guidelines for the respective Local Government Council elective positions from their District Electoral Commission offices, or download soft copies from the EC website," the statement read.
The EC said the move is intended to ensure transparency, fairness, and compliance with electoral laws as part of the ongoing Roadmap to the 2026 General Elections.
The fresh nominations are expected to reignite political activity in the affected districts as parties and independent aspirants prepare to fill the vacant slots and resume their campaigns ahead of next year’s polls.
