The Electoral Commission in Ntungamo District has concluded the two-day nomination exercise for parliamentary candidates ahead of the 2026 general elections, with a total of 27 aspirants cleared to contest across various constituencies.
According to the District Returning Officer, Latif Ngozi, the exercise ended smoothly and peacefully, with 22 directly elected Members of Parliament and 5 Woman MPs successfully nominated.
“As Ntungamo Electoral District, we come to the end of the parliamentary nominations of 2025/2026. We have nominated a total of 22 directly elected Members of Parliament and 5 Woman MPs,” said Ngozi.
He noted that the district will witness a vibrant contest, as several political parties and independents are represented in the race.
“Ntungamo District is kind of balanced with all the parties represented — UPC, PFF, FDC, ANT, DF, NRM, and independents. Unfortunately, there’s no one from DP,” Ngozi added.
While the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) remains the dominant party in the nominations, Ngozi observed that the upcoming campaigns are expected to be highly competitive, especially between NRM flag bearers and independents who lost in the party primaries.
“What we foresee in the election will be hot because most of the candidates who have come as independents were NRM supporters who lost in the NRM primaries. They will fight with NRM flag bearers,” he said.
Despite the anticipated political heat during the campaigns, the nomination process in Ntungamo was described as calm and peaceful, marking a positive start to the electoral season in one of the most politically vibrant districts in southwestern Uganda.
