Makindye West Member of Parliament, Allan Ssewanyana, has officially announced his intention to seek re-election in the 2026 parliamentary elections, despite not receiving the endorsement of the National Unity Platform (NUP).
Ssewanyana made the declaration on Wednesday during a thanksgiving Mass held at Nsambya Gardens, led by Fr. Joseph Kasasa.
The event, which drew a large crowd of supporters, underscored the legislator’s enduring grassroots popularity in the constituency.
A two-term MP, Ssewanyana expressed disappointment over NUP’s internal vetting process, which saw the party flag awarded to Zahara Luyirika instead.
“It’s unfortunate that even after answering all the vetting questions well and having strong support on the ground, my party did not give me the card,” Ssewanyana said. “To this day, I have never seen the results to know where I failed.”
Despite the setback, he assured his supporters of his continued political journey, stating that he will return to the ballot in 2026. However, he did not disclose which political platform he would use.
“I want to assure you, my supporters, that I will stand again for Makindye West MP. I won’t tell you now how, but be assured that I am coming back,” he said.
In his homily, Fr. Kasasa called on politicians to uphold integrity, humility, and service to the people, warning against the abuse of power.
Ssewanyana’s declaration sets the stage for a potentially heated contest in Makindye West, as he prepares to reclaim his seat with or without the backing of the NUP.
