Erias Lukwago has today launched his bid to retain the Kampala Lord Mayor seat. Lukwago will be running for the seat under the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) which he officially joined in July 2020.

Lukwago outlined that he will focus on fighting for the rights of Kampala residents who he says have been oppressed. Acting as their shield, Lukwago says he will protect the city from corruption, misuse of public funds and land grabbers by cartels and mafia.
In attendance at Lukwago’s Wakaliga residence were political allies like FDC spokesperson Ssemujju Nganda, Nabbosa Ssebugwawo and other division mayors.
Lukwago is likely to face a tough race as his former party, the Democratic Party has fronted Beatrice Kayanja for the same position. In the running for Kampala mayor are also musician turned politicians Joseph Mayanja (National Unity Platform), Daniel Kazibwe alias Ragga Dee (National Resistance Movement).
Lukwago has been Kampala Mayor since January 2011. He first came to the position fronted by the Democratic Party (DP) which he has since fallen out with. Lukwago has accused DP president Norbert Mao of undemocratic practices while Mao has countered that Lukwago failed to respect party positions.

In the subsequent election, Lukwago would run as an independent candidate though he increasingly publicly supported FDC and one of its founders Dr Kizza Besigye.
Lukwago is the first Lord Mayor of the city under the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA).
