“I decided to quit because the there was a lot of confusion, It would not be good to divide opposition in Kampala, it is therefore in the best interest that I step down for the good of opposition,” he claimed.

However, following Ssebagala relinquishing the party ticket, NUP called for fresh nominations for the position.

The party consequently awarded the ticket to Kampala Woman MP, Nabilah Nagayi Ssempala on Monday.

Speaking at the same event, NUP’s chairperson for the Electoral Management Committee, Mercy Walukamba said the choice of Nabilah will have to be vetted again by the Executive.

“We have done our part and now forwarded her name to the executive to advise on the way forward. We are doing this because we don’t want another scenario where the member pulls out like last time,” she said.

“We are still not aware of the reasons for Latif (Ssebagala’s) action,” she added.

Speaking to the press shortly after the declaration, Nabilah hit back at the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) which denied her a ticket back in July this year.

Nabilah Said: “FDC are women beaters. I am not the only lady who left. Where is the leader of the opposition? I am glad that I have got a party that respects me as a woman.”

Nabilah, if confirmed by the NUP board will face off with the incumbent, FDC’s Erias Lukwago in the 2021 polls.
