The Ministry of Health has started a 42-day countdown to officially declare Uganda Ebola-free after two more patients recovered and were discharged from treatment facilities.
The recovered patients a 55-year-old woman from Matuga and a 45-year-old woman from Kyegegwa received supportive care at Mulago National Referral Hospital and Fort Portal Regional Referral Hospital, respectively.
They tested negative for the Sudan Ebola Virus Disease before being discharged.
According to the Ministry, since the outbreak was declared on January 30, 2025, Uganda has recorded 12 confirmed cases of Ebola. Out of these, 10 patients have recovered, while two have died.
Despite the positive development, health officials warn that the outbreak is not yet over.
"The discharge of patients does not mean an end to the outbreak. An outbreak can only be declared over when cases have stopped, and 42 days have passed since the last case was discharged or died," said Dr. Charles Olaro, Acting Director General of Health Services.
The Ministry said it continues active surveillance and vaccination efforts to prevent further infections.
Officials also urge the public to remain vigilant and report any suspected Ebola symptoms to the nearest health facility or call the Ministry’s toll-free line: 0800-100-066.
Ebola is a highly contagious viral disease transmitted through direct contact with bodily fluids of infected persons or contaminated surfaces.
The Sudan strain, responsible for the current outbreak, has no approved vaccine, making early detection and treatment essential for controlling its spread.
