1621

Gregory XV becomes Pope after being elected in the shortest conclave of the seventeenth century. Cardinal Alessandro Ludovisi ascends to the papacy, taking the name Gregory XV, in the papal conclave held from 8 to 9 February 1621.

 

1654

Spanish forces led by Don Gabriel de Rojas y Figueroa seize Fort Rocher during the Anglo-Spanish War. The Capture of Fort Rocher occurs on the Caribbean island of Tortuga as Spanish troops take control of the pirate-held fort.

 

1775

The British parliament declares Massachusetts to be in a state of rebellion, a precursor to the American Revolutionary War. In response to colonial unrest, Parliament's declaration grants soldiers authority to shoot suspected rebels on sight, leading to the flight of colonial leaders from Boston.

 

1849

The Roman Republic is established, temporarily replacing the government of the Papal States. Carlo Armellini, Giuseppe Mazzini, and Aurelio Saffi lead the republican government following Pope Pius IX's departure to Gaeta.

 

1922

Brazil joins the Berne Convention copyright treaty, becoming a member of the international copyright protection agreement.

 

1962

Jamaica signs an agreement for independence within the British Commonwealth later in the year. Jamaica secures a path to independence within the British Commonwealth through a signed agreement in 1962.
