Mpox treatment centres in eastern DR Congo are under immense strain as ongoing conflict displaces millions, complicating healthcare delivery.

Dr Ngashi Ngongo of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) acknowledged the challenges of providing care but noted a glimmer of hope, with over 150 patients returning to Bukavu for continued treatment.

The crisis has been exacerbated by the emergence of a highly contagious mutant strain of mpox, Clade 1a with the APOBEC3 mutation, raising concerns about increased human-to-human transmission.

The combination of public health threats and armed conflict has created a dire humanitarian situation requiring urgent international intervention.

The eastern region remains engulfed in unrest following the rapid advance of Rwanda-backed M23 rebels since January.

Major cities, including Goma and Bukavu, have fallen under rebel control, leading to mass prison escapes that have heightened insecurity. Thousands of inmates, many convicted of serious crimes, are now at large, deepening the crisis.

The United Nations has warned that the conflict could spill over into neighbouring countries, further destabilising the region.

Humanitarian efforts have also been severely disrupted, with looting and civil unrest obstructing the delivery of essential aid.

In response, the United States has entered exploratory talks with the DR Congo on potential mineral partnerships.

With its vast reserves of copper, cobalt, and uranium, the country has proposed granting exploration rights in exchange for support against the M23 rebels.

The discussions aim to promote responsible mineral development while addressing the escalating conflict.
