The Ministry of Water and Environment has launched Water and Environment Week in Karamoja with a series of activities aimed at promoting hygiene and environmental conservation.

On the first day, ministry officials and development partners undertook a general cleaning exercise at Moroto Central Market, removing solid waste, unclogging drainage trenches, and sweeping the area.

The effort sought to highlight the importance of sanitation in public spaces.

Wilson Tabaaro, Manager of the Water for Production Regional Centre in Karamoja, emphasised hygiene as a key focus of the week.

“One of the key activities of Water and Environment Week is general cleanliness. We reached out to our partners, and I am happy with the great turnout, which reflects the strong collaboration between the Ministry and stakeholders,” he said.

Paul Loduk, the Moroto Central Market Master, commended the initiative. “I am overwhelmed by how clean the market is now. I thank the Ministry of Water and Environment staff and development partners who participated in the exercise. The market produces a lot of waste, so it is encouraging to see volunteers step in to help,” he said.

Following the clean-up, development partners toured the Ministry’s regional building complex, which is under construction. Tabaaro described the tour as an opportunity for partners to assess progress. “This building will house offices for regional staff and improve the efficiency and coordination of the Ministry’s activities,” he explained.

The Water and Environment Week is being commemorated under the theme: “Water and Environment Resources for Enhanced Resilience and Improved Incomes and Livelihoods.”

Activities will continue throughout the week, focusing on environmental conservation, sanitation, and community engagement to promote sustainable water management.

The week’s events will culminate in a Menstrual Hygiene Run on 15th March, with proceeds supporting girls in Karamoja.
