Ministry of Health Cracks Down on Doctors Splitting Time Between Public,Private Work

The Ministry of Health has called on healthcare providers in government facilities to prioritise their roles or face disciplinary action.

This follows growing concerns about health workers neglecting their duties in public hospitals to engage in private practices, leaving patients without adequate care.

The Ministry blames this trend for worsening the state of healthcare in Uganda. A tragic incident at Fort Portal Regional Referral Hospital, where a patient died due to the absence of medical personnel, has brought the issue into focus.

Many health workers were reportedly unavailable, with some on holiday and others working in private clinics.

According to the acting Director General of health services, Dr. Charles Olaro, "Doctors and nurses must decide where their priorities lie. Government hospitals are the first point of care for many Ugandans, and abandoning patients for private work is unacceptable."

The Ministry has also warned of stricter monitoring and enforcement of work schedules in public hospitals to ensure accountability. Healthcare workers have been urged to honor their commitments to government facilities or formally exit the system if they prefer private work.

While the Ministry acknowledges the challenges system challenges, it maintains that patients’ lives must not be compromised.
