The Ministry of Health has taken a firm stand against medical practitioners prescribing medication to patients over the phone, a practice linked to divided attention between public and private clinics.

Dr Diana Atwine, permanent secretary at the Ministry of Health, has criticised this behavior, highlighting its impact on patient care and professional ethics.

“You must be present for your patients,” Dr. Atwine said during a recent meeting.

“People will remember you for your availability and effort, even in challenging circumstances.”

She condemned the practice of phone prescriptions, warning that those involved would face consequences.

To demonstrate her resolve, Dr. Atwine announced the interdiction of the in-charge at Fortportal Regional Referral Hospital, citing leadership lapses.

“We are appointing someone new today,” she declared, emphasizing the need for accountability in the health sector.

The hospital, a key provider for the Rwenzori Sub-region, has been struggling with insufficient medical supplies, staff shortages, and deteriorating infrastructure.

These challenges have affected its capacity to deliver quality care, prompting concern among patients and healthcare workers.

In response, a stakeholder dialogue meeting has been scheduled for January 10, 2025, at the hospital to address these issues.

Dr. Atwine has called on government officials, healthcare providers, and local leaders to participate in finding solutions.

The Ministry of Health aims to use the dialogue to propose actionable reforms to improve healthcare services in the region.

This initiative is expected to guide future policy decisions, ensuring that residents of the Rwenzori Sub-region receive the quality care they deserve.

The ministry’s actions, including the interdiction and stakeholder dialogue, signal a renewed commitment to addressing healthcare challenges and holding professionals accountable forethical practices.
